Furigana Bulletin Published for Kanji-Beginners


A monthly bulletin "Gaikoku-jin Netwrok Tayori", or a monthly newsletter for expat, has been launched by a special project team organized in TIFA's Cross-cultural Friendship Activity group.

Texts are not written in English but in Japanese consisting of Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana.  All the Kanji characters come with "Furigana" Rubi placed on them so that Kanji-beginners can read and understand.  Furigana is used as a reading aid for Japanese children who might not recognize kanji, but are able to read the word when written in hiragana.  We are sure it could help Japanese learners a lot, too.

The bulletin is thus characterized by Furigana-supported Japanese and "Non-English" texts.  There is more to it than that.  The special project team comprises Peruvian, Chinese and Korean ladies.  Three of them raised the idea of such a bulletin one year ago for convenience of expatriates.

Most of the expatriates settled down in Japan, reportedly, have learned or studied basic Japanese starting from Hiragana and Katakana but are still on the steep hill way up to the Kanji mountain.  The Hiragana bulletin will surely serve them as a good guidance to Toride life.
